Bears, Wolves & Mountain Lions now protected in Illinois

BlackBearsRSPRINGFIELD – Bears, wolves and mountain lions now have added protections in Illinois after a measure sponsored by State Senator Linda Holmes (D-Aurora) was signed into law.

Now, American black bears, gray wolves and mountain lions are protected species under the Illinois Wildlife Code.  These animals were native predators, but have been absent for decades in Illinois.

“This measure protects biodiversity in our state and ensures that bear, wolf and mountain lion populations can grow to sustainable levels,” Holmes said.

42nd District fair connects seniors with services (VIDEO)

072314 js 0337ROver 100 seniors gathered at the Prisco Community Center in Aurora recently for the 42nd District Senior Resource Fair.

State Senator Linda Holmes (D – Aurora) joined with State Representatives Linda Chapa LaVia and Stephanie Kifowit and the Prisco Community Center to host the free event. Nearly 20 local and state agencies and organizations participated.  

“The state has a marvelous array of services for our seniors and our veterans,” Senator Holmes said. “Unfortunately, people are not always aware of everything that is offered to them. When you have agencies and organizations together in one location, it definitely simplifies the process for our seniors.”

microbeadsRSPRINGFIELD - State Senator Linda Holmes (D-Aurora) was a co-sponsor of the legislation that bans the use of micro-beads in Illinois. The bill was signed by Governor Pat Quinn on Sunday.

“This plan is the result of an agreement between environmental groups and manufacturers,” Holmes said. “The compromise allows businesses ample time to sell the products they currently have while designing environmentally-friendly alternatives.”

Micro-beads, small, plastic spheres in personal care products, can cause serious environmental damage according to recent studies.

ERA resolution passes the Senate (AUDIO)

052214 js 1082RRecently, the Illinois Senate approved a resolution to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. I was proud to cast my vote in favor of this measure to ensure Illinois becomes the 36th state to ratify the ERA.
